Featuring an ALUXX SL aluminum frameset, Giant's XTC 1 provides the aspiring racer and speed-oriented trail rider the essentials for awesome off-road riding. Marzocchi's 100mm-travel fork provides smooth action no matter how bumpy the terrain is. And, the Mavic hoops are ready for zooming up the hills and flying down them, too. Shimano and SRAM combine on the 27-speed drivetrain and Shimano steps up with their powerful hydraulic discs. Plus, you even get clipless pedals.

      Comments:

I bought this bike as an upgrade to my 1999 Giant XTC SE-1. After throwing my old bike around for some 45,000 miles before losing count of the miles I wanted something that would be as equal to that and so far this has not let me down. It handles even better than my old one and I have really put it through some test. It will climb, descend, take jumps, tread water, and take anything you throw at it and just keep on going. The components on the bike are not the top of the line but they are good enough that you will not have to worry about them letting you down. The shifting on the bike is very smooth and stays in place no matter how rough the terrain is without bouncing out of gear. It will take up to medium jumps very smoothly and will take on some pretty large jumps but as with any hardtail bike the landing is a little rough. All in all this is a great bike and I would highly recommend it to anyone either looking to replace an older bike or upgrade to something better. I would give this bike a score of 9.5 out of 10 for performance, a 9 out of 10 for component quality versus price, and a 9.5 out of 10 overall.

      Comments:

I bought my XTC1 a year ago, and felt it was the best valued hardtail with quality components for the money that I could find. I've put more than 3K miles on it in a year averaging 4-5 rides per week mostly at Santa Teresa Park in South San Jose. I've riden everything from steep ascents up Boundary Trail to rocky single track switch backs on Stiles and Rocky Ridge Trails to blazing fast downhills on Coyote Peak Trail. This bike is a dream! It handles every terain I've taken it on with ease. It climbs well on the steep trails, and handling is fluid and predictable on fast downhills and technical single tracks. I only have two gripes: 1)Unless you ride this bike only on pavement or hardpack, then the stock Kenda tires must go - don't get them anywhere near mud, gravel or loose dirt. I replaced the Kendas with WTB Velociraptors - problem solved. 2) This bike chews through brake pads! I've gone through 4 sets of front and rear pads in a year. I do a lot of riding and use the brakes a lot, but replacing worn brakes every 3 months seems excessive. If I ever get motivated enough, maybe I'll replace the stock Shimano brakes with better quality brakes and larger rotors. Despite my gripes, the XTC1 is over-all an excellent value for a hardtail MTB. 30 bucks for new brakes every 3 months is a small price to pay for all the great fun I'm having on this bike. In the future, I will definitely buy another Giant MTB.

        Comments:

I've had this bike for about 4 months and 90% of the time I use it for commuting and 10% on trails. I know bikes aren't fast people are fast, but compared to my old Trek and my recent Jamus the XTC 1 is FAST. I've read quite a few people have gone out and up-graded the components on this bike, I guess these people are advanced riders but I've had no problems with any of the components yet. The shifter is accurate and the brakes are very good! This bike feels very responsive and solid, the trails I've been on have been primarily flat with a few hills, mostly hard packed dirt and some gravel. The stock tires are great for the dry pavement and hard packed dirt but loose gravel made the bike feel loose @ 60 psi. I will have to try again at a lower pressure. Over a dozen people at my work have told me how good my looks, I tell them it handles even better.

        Comments:

I use my bike for every thing I cant drive a car im half blind and even use it to do service calls for work and groceries and walk the dog . the seat was as hard as a brick but i quickly changed it to my old seat then a air seat from canadian tire no cycling stores open in the winter here. the pedals require special shoes so i changed them to the old style . the tires are dangerous they will slide out in even small mud patches and sand on pavement so be carefull because these are the fastest tires i ever tried .The brakes are the best they are effort less and im on them a lot my dog is so slow,,,This is the best bike i ever rode and for just over a 1000 dollars [$]

I've upgraded most of the components on this bike but the frame is rock solid, climbs great, handles descents with ease and is honestly the best aluminum hardtail on the market
